Albert  Marquet

This picture belongs to those few production "Fauve" of M (only 10-15) - that from many years don't pass anymore in auctions. Marquet when doesn't paint fauve, he doesn't produce anything of good. But when he wants to paint with strength, then he paints fauve, in his own way. The picture belongs to those of his little production Fauve that "charge with colors the colored subjects" "at times edging with black line" "using fat brushstrokes" remaining also"indebted with  impressionists", that is landscapist and figurative.

The picture is done in a particular place, Dakar, in equatorial Africa. From this alone and exclusive meeting with equatorial Africa, Marquet clearly received strong emotions from strong light, and more intense colors,--well different from the others habitat-very soft and misty-which Marquet was accustomed, above all France and Algery.

Milan's University reflettografhy 2004  The picture is very well succeeded - see comment Prf Dr. Ludwig, that attributes the picture to Marquet, explaining why', and finishing saying =

"lead to the conclusion that this picture was painted in the usual manner of the author.”

"proof of the dedicated care taken by the artist to the scene, particularly to the anatomy of the figures and their distribution within the scene; the figures almost appear to dance on the beach."

« The work is the result of an extremely complex pictorial elaboration,"  and he also confirmed that, with infrared, and reading without patina of grime, one sees the picture with much more contrast between the drawing and areas of flat colours, and can be see the Marquet’s characteristic brush strokes, and his areas of flat colour method. The shades appears with more contrast compared to what is seen with the naked eye ; which all makes possible a more Fauve interpretation of the arrangement of colours of the painting and ties to the pictorial method of painter. It is also possible to observe three pentimenti, including a structural one.

“ The transparency of some of the yellow/ochre pigments permits a clean reading of the structure of the extremely carefully drawn hut. Although there is no evidence in the reflectogram of anything different from what is already visible in the painting, the transparency of the patina of dirt and the improved contrast between certain pigments do nevertheless draw attention to the characteristic brush-work and the method of painting the background colours which is more in the fauve manner than intuition would suggest at first sight. In this case the transparency of several pigments in infrared and the reading without the superficial patina allows more contrasts to be seen in the drawing and in the background colours. Particularly the way as the huge mass of quays visible between the horizon and the boat have been portrayed, lead to the conclusion that this picture was painted in the usual manner of the author.”

It is the only picture  from Marquet painted in the week of September 1908 in Dakar.

The riflettografy working with direct light has not been able to recognize the signature drowned in the tall layer of oil of the pave'. The signature  has been perceived to mean of a photo made with a side illumination that put in evidence of it desiccated edges, allowing the reading of the all signature.

To confirmation of the Wildenstein, - that, in his book on Marquet did out 6/7 years ago only, he speaks for the first time  of this trip to Dakar of Marquet accompanied by Matisse 1908, -

"New on the market." and "Rare and inusuals". Is very beautiful and is an Unicum of Marquet. Juvenile and creative picture of Marquet.  For which it is a very beautiful picture by Marquet, alive, and entirely particular.

Definitive guarantee: the signature is not controversial. Is equal to the specimen of Marquet; rather he uses a capital M rarely used, but used by Marquet, and it is  put in the still fresh oil of the pavè, in which with his brush he created edges that dried with time together with the rest of the canvas, The canvas shows a 100 year-old craquelet.

Of this trip to Dakar up to 7/8 years ago anybody  knew anything.

Together with Matisse   As Wildenstein assures, Marquet was in Dakar together with Matisse. Here he is in fact in the angle to the right in low, to paint himself -to type of gag- in action to draw. To confirmation = the brushstroke with which he painted himself it is not rough as that of Marquet, but, as of use, it is very more liquid.

Therefore our affirmations are not controversial.

To confirmation of the safety of this painting to Marquet  must be noticed that his more used measures of canvas is cm 65x 81. This 55x81cm cavas is like other cases of M. He cuts the canvas when he knows that he will put strong colors on the canvas

Banlieu

To notice:  "Banlieu October 1908" is the only true memory of his experience in Dakar, in which he abounded in small brushes for wish' of analysis. In fact ours is dated September 1908 and Banlieu October 1908. Nevertheless the Uny Milano discovered under the patina of  dirty a lot of use of the beloved big brushstrokes of Marquet. Neither must be forgotten the many analytical and realistic pictures of Marquet, never remembered of "experts", produced especially in places of strong sun.

Provenance

The picture was received by the actual owner in gift from his father around 1960, in turn received by its uncle and godfather rear-admiral. Nobody had thought to a picture of value - it was simply a picture of pleasant complexion of inviting exotic sea environment.

However it was brought shortly after in Switzerland,--waiting for investigations--where the owner had commercial relationships to Berna with a primary firm of brokers for fruit's wagons that he produced in the agricultural farm of his father. The owner is Swiss citizen with residence in the Grigionis.

Brushstroke  Signature  Sky

In substance, in this picture, besides the use of  same colors of others Marquets known fauves pictures, besides the edging with black line, and the fat brushstroke, there is the presence of his signature that cannot be contested (all it takes to do is bringing the picture in a technical laboratory for examinations, what  it will be able to certify, without problems, that the read words are

" Marquet 1980 Dakar", and that they are entirely equal to other Marquets sure signatures.  Besides, this signature cannot also be contested for the fact that it is drowned in the fat and tall thickness of the oil of the pave', and it has dried, with the time, with the rest of the oil of the picture. The signature can also be read in the in relief edges, with hedgetop light. Besides, in the clouds, the refletto underlines the use of him of big brushes. For last,  see photo BGA/B/C- the brushstroke in the clouds is entirely equal to his brushstroke in the sky of the Trouville picture.

Wildenstein Institute     Martinet     Angelika Heinick

As the value of this picture we remember indeed the photo attached 3 that is here' an  article by Angelika Heinick well note journalist gone, out 24.4.2006 on Faz Net.  = Wildenstein oder Nichtsein: Das Pariser "Wildenstein institute". that is' : or to have the consent Wildenstein' or to be nothing. We since 1983 asked the opinion to Mr. Martinet brother-in-law of Marquet, what expert of the Wildenstein Institut for the Catalogs Monet and Marquet who answered us through Mrs Michele Paret telling: different technique and totally absent subject.

We already have' answered on the technique, signature and brushstroke of this picture. We notice instead that Mr. Martinet, brother-in-law of Marquet entirely ignored the trip of a week of M together with Matisse to Dakar September 1908, trip that, only some years ago, the same Wildenstein asseverates. The Wildenstein has nevertheless always sustained his "expert" Mr Marinet, denying the paternity' to M.  Usual action in this art market in which, in every case, the own "expert" is always sustained.

Value of this painting

Marquet is notoriously a painter of value, one of those that invented the art fauve,  without the excesses of Vlamink. Its painting is very pleasant from the art market because remained landscapist  , very tied up to the impressionists, edging and loading of color subjects colored. We have recently seen some prices for painters of his epoch and caliber, 2003, for them pictures "rare and unusual." what gives us a base of evaluation price. Certainly these pictures were not also "beautiful", because they received well taller prices with others pictures es Klimt 135 million dollars, surely beautiful.

Gaugin 14.0 sfrs          2003 *

V Gogh 13.5 sfrs         2003 * million of francs

Klimt 35.0 sfrs            2003 *

Modigliani 32.0 sfrs    2003 *

Renoir 28.0 sfrs          2003 *

Leger 27.0 sfrs            2003 *

Schiele 25.0 sfrs         2003 *

The present picture of M, for the motives above suitable, deserves a tall price being beautiful, and unique, new for the market. (the presence of Matisse also has a small value.) (N B. The pictures not fauve of M are worth very little, like pictures of the painter of Sunday. while  his very few  fauves pictures . --that they don't pass since a long time from the auctions.-- are worth a lot, because in them M engages himself a lot.)

To motive for the attitude of the Wildenstein, attitude that however' one is able' to counter, with tried tests, we believe that a price around 10 million of dollars is that correct in this case.
